Moving Money Out of India: An NRI Repatriation Guide

Date:

Key takeaway

NRE and FCNR money is generally freely repatriable. NRO money — including sale proceeds, inheritance and rent — can be remitted up to USD 1 million per financial year after tax compliance. Pay the tax first, collect the paperwork, then ask your bank to remit.

Where is the money?

Source Usual account Repatriation
Money sent from abroad NRE / FCNR Generally free
Property sale proceeds NRO Within USD 1 million per financial year; original foreign exchange investment may qualify separately for up to two residential properties
Inheritance NRO Within USD 1 million per financial year
Rent, dividends, pension NRO Current income after tax, generally permitted

Step by step

  1. Identify the source of each amount and keep documents linking money to source.
  2. Pay or provide for Indian tax; file your return where required.
  3. Get a chartered accountant’s certificate (Form 15CB) where required and file the online declaration (Form 15CA).
  4. Submit the remittance request to your bank with supporting documents.
  5. The bank remits to your overseas account.
  6. Report the receipt in your country of residence as its tax law requires.

Larger amounts

The USD 1 million limit applies per financial year (April to March). Larger amounts can be spread over years, or approval sought from the RBI in suitable cases.

Common pitfalls

  • Remitting before tax is settled.
  • Missing proof that money came from a permitted source.
  • Mixing NRO funds into an NRE account without following the rules.
  • Agricultural land sold to an ineligible buyer.
